In The GS Pay Scale, How Many Pay Grades Are There?
Each of the General Schedule’s 15 distinct pay levels is explained below. The credentials required for each grade is determined by the type of qualifications needed and the level of responsibility, and the complexity of the work, each post is classed by the Federal agency. The following are the most popular qualifications for the grades:
- GS-2 jobs require only the highest school diploma and no additional work experience to be considered.
- These positions are filled with college professors. Bachelor’s degree is the highest level of education.
- The GS-9 position requires the completion of a master’s degree.
What Is The Procedure For Moving Up Steps In The GS Pay Scale?
There are 10 steps within every one of 15 pay grade (steps 1-10). Moving up to the next grade (also known as “within-grade step raises”) is contingent on satisfactory work results and a variety of tenures:
- Step 1-3 for 1 year;
- Step 4-6 for 2 years;
- Step 7-9 for 3 years.
Each stage is worth approximately 3% of the federal employee’s salary in terms of the wage difference.
When Will There Be a 2022 Government Pay Raise?
It is customary to expect to have the General Schedule basic pay schedule to be revised yearly in January, with an overall federal increase based on countrywide increases in pay and salaries for private sector employees. Locality pay is a geographical-based percentage rate which reflects the pay of non-federal employees in particular geographic regions, that are determined by surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is also available to the vast majority of GS employees.
What are the Current GS Locality Pay Areas?
In the USA, there are currently more than 40 locality pay areas that cover the lower 48 states and that include the District of Columbia in addition to Alaska, Hawaii, and the United States territories and possessions. The major metropolitan areas (such as Los Angeles, New York, as well as Washington, DC) are covered by the majority of the locality pay zones, while two cover entire states (Alaska as well as Hawaii) and the remainder of the United States, including its territories and possessions, is included in the catch-all Rest of the United States (RUS) locality pay area. Locality pay isn’t available to GS workers in other countries. Congress and the president are authorized to make changes. Congress have the power to amend the otherwise applicable across-the-board and locality pay formulas.
If it is related to specific jobs that are at GS grade levels in particular geographical areas The OPM can approve special rates that are higher than standard GS rates.
