In The GS Pay Scale, How Many Pay Grades Are There?
Each of the 15 General Schedule’s pay levels is explained below. Depending on the credentials necessary and the level of responsibility and nature of the job, each post is classed by the federal agency. These are the most common qualifications for the grades:
- GS-2 jobs require only a high school education and no additional previous experience to be considered.
- These positions are filled with college professors. Bachelor’s degree is the highest educational level.
- GS-9 jobs require an advanced degree.
What Is The Procedure For Moving Up Steps In The GS Pay Scale?
There are a total of 10 steps within each of the 15 pay grades (steps 1 to 10). Moving up to the next grade (also called “within-grade step raises”) is contingent on satisfactory outcomes in work and a variety of tenures, as follows:
- Step 1-3 for 1 year;
- Step 4-6 for 2 years;
- Step 7-9 for 3 years.
Each stage is worth about 3% of a federal employee’s pay in terms of the wage difference.
When Will There Be a 2022 Government Pay Raise?
It is customary for the General Schedule basic pay schedule to be revised yearly in January, and includes the overall increase in federal pay that is based on the countrywide increase in wages and salaries for private-sector employees. Locality pay is a geographic-based percentage rate that represents the wages of non-federal workers in particular geographic regions, according to surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is also available to the vast majority of GS employees.
What are the Current GS Locality Pay Areas?
In the USA, there are now more than 40 locality pay zones that cover all 48 lower states and those in the District of Columbia in addition to Alaska, Hawaii, and the United States territories and possessions. Major metropolitan areas (such like Los Angeles, New York along with Washington, DC) are covered by the majority of locality pay regions and two of them cover whole states (Alaska as well as Hawaii) and the remainder of the United States, including its possessions and territories, is covered by the general Rest of the United States (RUS) locality pay region. Locality pay is not available to GS workers outside of the United States. Both the President as well as Congress are able to make modifications to the otherwise applicable across-the-board and locality pay formulas.
When it comes to particular jobs that are at GS grade levels in particular geographical areas, the OPM may authorize special rates that are higher than the normal GS rates.
